The Social Security Administration was established in 1935 by FDR as part of the New Deal. It provides government insurance to those who cannot work to earn income due to age or disability. Since its inception, countless pieces of legislation have modified or otherwise affect the social security program, though the main thrust of the original act still stands.

Social security taxes are deducted from the income of any working individual. The vision of the original program is for this money to be held by the government to be paid out if/when the individual becomes unable to work, either due to retirement or a disability. In practice, however, the program spends more money than it earns, meaning that money is not “held” until an individual needs it, but rather the younger/able populations pay-ins are quickly distributed to the older/disabled population. The fact that this practice is unsustainable and will eventually bankrupt the system has received much attention in recent years.

In addition to these fundamental problems with the social security system, many find that pursuing any Holyoke social security case is difficult. The bureaucratic nature of the administration, its forms, and its procedures leave many frustrated and confused, sometimes losing access to the benefits to which they are entitled. Conditional rules, specialized terminology, and counterintuitive policies are all frequent complaints. In addition to keeping all deadlines, maintaining meticulous records, and engaging in open communication, seeking legal counsel can go a long way in your Holyoke social security case.
