Gastric band and gastric bypass are the two most common and well-know types of bariatric (obesity) surgery. Gastric bypass is increasingly popular; this increases the number of patients helped, but also increases the potential for Holyoke gastric bypass malpractice. The most common gastric bypass procedure (there are several) is called the Roux-en-Y. All gastric bypass procedures sever a section of the stomach and small intestine and, in effect, reroute the digestive tract to greatly reduce the size and capacity ofthe stomach. For the individual, this means reduced food intake, which often has a dramatic effect on the obesity. The most recent refinement in the gastric bypass procedure has been the development of an alternative to the “open” surgery of a large abdominal incision. Instead, a laparoscopic version of the surgery has reduced healing times while accomplishing the same end result.

Gastric bypass surgery offers a safe and effective treatment for obesity to many individuals. Since the mid-90’s the number of procedures performed each year has skyrocketed, and currently stands in the hundreds of thousands. While there are many success stories, there is also some evidence that the procedure can be dangerous under certain conditions (such as an inexperienced surgeon, for example). Severe or even fatal reaction to gastric bypass surgery may indicate Holyoke gastric bypass malpractice, a form of medical negligence. Some research has found that post-operative death rates for gastric bypass procedures may be as high as 1 in 50. Because the success stories are balanced with the fatal horror stories, it is important to have the facts before going under the knife.

With your free initial Holyoke gastric bypass malpractice consultation, our attorneys can take the raw facts of your case and add years of experience and knowledge of the legal and medical precedents of gastric bypass malpractice.
