All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are immensely popular in this country and around the world. Even though they are not street-legal in most countries, their rugged design makes they suitable and fun for many other terrains and activities. Mechanically, ATVs are most similar to motorcycles in design and utilize additional wheels (three, four, or six) for added stability and mobility on various surfaces. Most ATV riders use their vehicles for recreation, though some have found that the ATV is the perfect work vehicle for moving around large properties (e.g. ranches) in much the same way that horses were once used.

Almost as soon as ATVs were introduced in the early 1970’s, Holyoke ATV accident and safety concerns came to the surface. Because of their design, common usage on private, remote property, and lack of initial, legal regulation, ATVs were and are prone to irresponsible, improper usage. This leads quickly to injury. Even the most rugged and sturdy rider can sustain significant, even severe injury while using and ATV. Once the government began keeping statistics on ATV accidents and injuries, a clear trend emerged: women and children are more likely to be injured through ATV use. In an attempt to address this, the regulation of ATVs has largely taken the form of age limitations based on engine size.

In addition, with the rising popularity of ATVs, local, regional, and national ATV organizations have emerged. This means that ATV training is widely available, though it is not mandatory. Usage restrictions exist on various levels of government, often providing guidance for safe use but occasionally offering conflictual rules.
